I have been meaning to post a wee blog since this image charmed its way into my life in December. We were hosting a little Holiday brunch at our home. My amazing team showered me, quite unexpectedly, with thoughtful gifts. My wife remarked after, “I think your students might like you”.
But what really made my day (indeed, year) was a coffee mug and an amazing card in which Kyle Artelle and conspirators created this image. Yes, that’s Photoshop magic – the team with me at the helm (of Team Zissou’s underwater sub).
You see – I’ve always loved Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou movie. How could one not love its quirky charm, soundtrack, and cast (especially Bill Murray)?
I draw on the movie a lot. I feel for Zissou. He’s getting old and does not get out for research as much as he used to (though he still revels in the attention from media!). He steals espresso machines and orders “interns” to make him lattes (though I actually differ here, making espressos for our lab volunteers). Anyways, I frequently self-ridicule, calling myself the terrestrial Zissou…and Kyle and friends merrily aid me in doing so!
Grateful to work with people who are not only ‘productive’ but also a lot of fun.
