Safety First. Ridicule Second.

Two things I know as Truth:

1. Since I became a father, I am a safety freak. Its the drop in testosterone (a useful but dangerous drug for single men without children).  I am especially safety conscious when I am co-charged with the responsibility of overseeing 14 undergraduate students in a remote field school setting as I had been doing over the last two weeks at the Hakai Beach Institute.

2. There is something about me that attracts friendly ridicule from my students.  I will admit that I do like hamming things up, and my pre-occupation with Safety is one such thing.

On the last night of the class, our students combined these Truths and gifted me this outstanding video. The timestamps on the photos tell me they hatched the plan early in the course. And they executed it brilliantly.

Oh – you might wonder about the helicopter ending…..its in reference to my hitch-hiking a ride on a chopper the morning we departed. They were clearly justified in this additional ridicule.

Oh – and they busted me for paddling a kayak without a lifejacket.  But you will have to believe me – there were extenuating circumstances.

In all seriousness, my time with these amazing students, plus my friend, colleague and co-instructor, Jess Housty, makes this school among the very best 2 weeks of the year.
