Braving the Seas

A crash course in small vessels

As we prepare to make our journey up the coast, lab members Ilona Mihalik, Jess MacLean, and I headed to the classroom to get certified in small vessel operation, marine safety, and marine radio operation.

After a week of studying and examinations, we three scientists hit the water to put our new skills to the test. Decked out in these stylish cruiser suits, we practiced docking, navigation, and marine safety in preparation for the next couple of months spent in the field.

A big thank you to UVic and Amanda Muench for organizing these training sessions, and to our expert Captains, George and Daniel for showing us the ropes (or ‘lines’, if they’re in use).

Over,
Persia
